Video blog: More Stupid Girl

I kept going on Garbages "Stupid Girl", I more or less have it complete. Made a lessony type video for my mates, I'm still enjoying the song a lot. Sorry that the tab doesn't exactly seem to line up with what I'm playing in places, but I think you'll get the drift. Sorry to Nil - too much talking in this one. Melvin however, you are in luck!

If you don't know Garbage "Stupid Girl" you can watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1HBxUWSxcq8

  1. Hey Jaw,
    We all appreciate your video!
I know you have been in contact with Naudo and his friend Juan in the past. Ever thought of reaching out to them and inquiring about Naudo making an instructional video? He wouldn't even need to necessarily speak, instead he could slowly demonstrate how to play a piece at a close-up angle. I wonder if he would ever be willing to do something of that nature?

  2. I can't imagine Naudo doing that. hah

  3. Roman made an attempt a while back to do an interview with Naudo, as did Juan. Nothing seemed to come of it. I gather he's just this super-easy going guy that is happy just enjoying what he does, no more, no less. And if that is the case, we should probably not rock the boat - if the music comes from that, don't try to change it hey - we like the music! :)

But I have noticed that Juan seems to be pushing him a bit more, or that he is getting a little bit more interested in his internet audience...for instance, he's got his own channel on youtube again, and has been speaking on camera, and even subtitles on one of the videos.

I agree, it would be great to see some instructional videos; and perhaps with time he might see some value in it too.

The other thing which I'd like to see happen is for him to take his music on the road, do a bit of a tour. He's probably not well known enough to draw a crowd so he'd need to target places with the right crowds to be able to cover his costs as a minimum...but I think most importantly he needs somebody else to organise and manage it. He plays music; someone else organises getting that music to the people!

(but even before that, get a few hours in a recording studio and play everyones favourite songs and produce a CD. I have mentioned it to him in the past more than once...perhaps he is nearly ready. If it was an issue of money then I'm sure I could rattle a tin here "pre-order Naudo's CD" to cover the cost of studio time. I'd even be prepared to sort out his licensing issues (it's actually quite easy to licence songs for a CD) and even get proper CDs pressed...and set up selling the CDs...Instructional vids; a lot of effort for probably little return. Touring; same. But to produce a CD would require a few hours in the recording studio, someone else to manage the rest, and I reckon there would be enough buyers to justify the cost!)

(You know, saying that out loud, I suddenly feel like I should make a CD. Just as an exercise/experiment, I wouldn't consider I have a market to justify it, but I do get what the?! over 3000 mp3 downloads from my site per month!?)

(I've gotta stop talking to myself, it's going to cause me hard work.)

  7. Hi Jaw,

I wrote a comment, then I pressed Post Comment, entered my usual ID (URL/email), then confirmed, and nothing happened, lost it. Damned! At the very least, Ctrl + C would have avoided that.

Keep up the good work Jaw, for some strange reason it doesn't come as easy for me to write comments as it used to (on this blog or others), but I never miss anything happening here.
In my lost comment I was mentioning the video called "Naudo Teacher", that's what Bill is after, just Naudo playing this Beatles song at close up angle, and switching between different techniques - keeping the melody but changing the right hand rhythm style. I'd be surprised if it was not on Youtube.

Now Ctrl + C (you never know)

  8. Good to hear from you Rom. I figure your new job has probably changed the way you do things. Chime in from time to time when you get a moment, I've always valued your comments - my oldest and mostest commenter! You comments have helped steer the direction of my blog, so thanks, as always!

I'll see you round the traps :)

  10. JAW:
Next time, could you write about specific brands and models of 'electroacustic' classical guitars? Your thoughts and impressions on those which you have had a chance to play? Why did you choose yours? Would you change it if you could? What guitars do people like Igor and Naudo play?

    Also:
Have you written about the differences playing plugged/unplugged? I think I remember something about it but I'm not sure...

  11. Heather - no worries, glad to help out, and thanks for letting me know it's helping you out!

Hey Anon - yep, I've written about classical/electroacoustic, playing plugged/unplugged and what I like in guitars before...unfortunately, this being a vauge rambling blog, I haven't ever had a topic specifically on, well, anything! So my thoughts are spread out over the years in various posts so I cannot point you at a particular post - but google search is your friend. On the left panel of the blog, scroll down until you find "search" and put in some key words like "plugged in" and "classical". It's a bit of a hassle, but all the answers you seek are scattered around :)

...except for brands and models. I very rarely talk about brands and models. I don't ever specifically sit down comparing brands and models, I don't think like that. I think more in terms of functionality and design - whether a cutaway helped, what width and shape neck worked for me, whether I thought a dual pickup system fitted was better than a single piezo transducer. Who made it is kinda inconsequential to me! Something I've said many times when asked about choosing guitars is play as many as you can, and choose the one you liked best in your budget range. What works for one person won't work for another.

Hmm, I've been of very little help to you, sorry!

  12. Hi JAW - thanks for the "stupid" vid, great tune, yes I was "getting something from that" !

I must put in some hours to learn it, one part per month for me, might have it cracked for Christmas! Loved the right hand strum techniques, some clever finger work that I've not tried before. Already looking forward to the next vid.

    Cheers

  13. Good to hear you got something, I've done that a few times, where I'm playing something and wondering if I'm getting anything across at all!

I'm able to play the song now pretty fluently, I should post a vid. Or, I should wait until I've been playing it for over a year and all the subtleties that will occur during that time are in it, and then post. What I'm thinking though is post early, and then repost later. So far, I've reposted nothing. But planning to - rerecording some of my earlier steel string stuff on nylon.

    One day!

I'm working on a new blog video, I'm doing some screen video capturing of me at work on an arrangement, with commentary. It is taking AGES, so I probably shouldn't have mentioned anything. It's going to be long, a bit of an epic, I'm wondering who would spend the time going through it (I wouldn't!) Probably going to be around 30-40 mins.

Maybe will have it finished sometime in September...maybe October...

  14. Sounds like you're gonna be busy with Jaw the movie! I've stared trying to play part 1 of stupid girl - you're right they may be short, but each part is not simple! I may have to ask for some more detail, I'll let you know.

    Cheers
